Carbon Sources for Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation in Southern California Strawberry

چکیده
Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) has been adopted in over 900 ha California strawberry production as an alternative to chemical fumigation. Rice bran, the predominant carbon source for ASD, become increasingly expensive. In 2021–22 and 2022–23 field studies, we evaluated 20–30% lower-priced wheat middlings (Midds) dried distillers’ grain (DDG) at 21,800 kg ha−1 (in 2021) 17,000 2022) sources rice bran. The study was placed Santa Paula, September of each season preparation planting October. Soil air temperatures were 18–26 °C during that time. After incorporation into top 30 cm bed soil, beds reshaped, irrigation drip lines installed covered with totally impermeable film (TIF) prevent gas exchange. Beds irrigated saturate within 48 h after TIF installation. conditions measured redox potential (Eh) sensors 15 depth all plots. Both DDG Midds plots maintained Eh −180 0 mV two ASD weeks, while untreated aerobic 200 400 mV. Permeable bags inocula Macrophomina phaseolina, a lethal soil-borne pathogen strawberry, tubers perennial weed Cyperus esculentus deep initiation retrieved weeks later analyses. Two that, holes cut aerate ‘Victor’ or ‘Fronteras’ bare-root strawberries transplanted them. reduced viable microsclerotia M. phaseolina by 49% first 75 85% both second season. treatments tuber germination C. 86–90% compared one years. Perspectives of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation
Biological soil disinfestation is an environmentally friendly method to disinfest soil. From now on we refer to it as anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD). With ASD a green manure crop (40 t/ha) is homogeneously incorporated into the topsoil (0-30 cm) after which the field is lightly compacted and irrigated. Subsequently the field is mechanically covered with air tight virtually impermeable film...
متن کاملUnravelling the mechanism of pathogen inactivation during anaerobic soil disinfestation
Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) for the control of multiple soilborne pathogens is a viable alternative to the application of biocides and soil steaming. ASD implies soil wetting, incorporation of fresh organic matter, and covering with airtight plastic foil for several weeks. To speed up the whole process, Thatchtec has developed a procedure based on defined agricultural products (referred...
متن کاملMethyl Bromide Alternatives for Postharvest Insect Disinfestation of California Walnuts
Before shipment, California inshell walnuts destined for the valuable export market must be disinfested of both field pests (codling moth and navel orangeworm) and common storage pests (Indianmeal moth and red flour beetle). Until recently fumigation with methyl bromide has been the most common disinfestation method, but access to methyl bromide is now greatly restricted in developed countries,...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cover Crops with Potential for Use in Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) for Susceptibility to Three Species of Meloidogyne.
Several cover crops with potential for use in tropical and subtropical regions were assessed for susceptibility to three common species of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita, and M. javanica. Crops were selected based on potential use as organic amendments in anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) applications. Nematode juvenile (J2) numbers in soil and roots, egg production, a...
متن کاملLegacy effects of anaerobic soil disinfestation on soil bacterial community composition and production of pathogen-suppressing volatiles
There is increasing evidence that microbial volatiles (VOCs) play an important role in natural suppression of soil-borne diseases, but little is known on the factors that influence production of suppressing VOCs. In the current study we examined whether a stress-induced change in soil microbial community composition would affect the production by soils of VOCs suppressing the plant-pathogenic o...
